What Others Have to Say

Banishing Bullying Behavior: A Call to Action: From Early Childhood Through Senior Adulthood (new for 2019!)

“WOW! I am so impressed. I finished reading your book late last evening. I don’t even know where to start on my comments. I did not know how little I knew about bullying, especially from the perspective of the bully. I was, of course aware of the expressions of bullying, but knew little of the underlying causes.

I loved the mix of theory and research with interviews of both bullies and their victims, as well as the interview of experts. The research and interviews with experts made it credible. The interviews with bullies and the victims made it real, and produced an emotional impact. The combination made it an easy to read and understand book. I also loved the practical applications, including the checklists and other bullet listings. There are numerous things that readers can do immediately, which validates the sub title “A Call to Action” . The proposed actions are for the most part simple, logical and relatively easy for anyone to do”

Banishing Bullying Behavior: Transforming the Culture of Peer Abuse, by SuEllen Fried and Blanche Sosland. 2nd ed. Rowman & Littlefield, 2011. 185p bibl index afp; ISBN 9781610484329, $45.00; ISBN 9781610484336 pbk, $19.95; ISBN 9781610484343 e-book, $19.95. Reviewed in 2012apr CHOICE.

“Bullying has unfortunately become a major issue in school communities. Fried and Sosland have extensive experience to support their writing. Fried created a bully prevention program, BullySafeUSA, which is utilized in 36 states, in addition to authoring four books on the topic. Sosland brings her classroom expertise to the topic. The book defines bullying behavior; gives profiles of the bullies, targets, and witnesses; and discusses types of bullying (e.g., physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, and cyber bullying). The authors also give examples across grade levels. Most helpful is the authors’ description of roles of each change agent, including administrators, teachers (they address specific content area teachers separately), parents, counselors, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and others. This holistic approach assists communities in changing the culture of the school and challenges readers to end this cycle of pain.”

Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate, research, and professional collections.

“I just wanted to thank you so much again for your wonderful guidance last semester. Yesterday, all of the teachers reviewed the classroom rules/expectations that we guided them in, and it was a huge success! The kids responded very well, and when I had to refer to the list for redirection it was very effective!!!” —Gevura
